Dear Friend;

We had a fabulous turnout at the workshop last Saturday at the main library! More than 60 people attended and shared dozens of ideas for improving Burlingame. People were enthusiastic and energetic, and many volunteered their time to help with future projects.

Suggestions ranged from promoting small business ownership and improving the city’s Web site to starting a “Burlingame Boosters” organization and hosting an annual Pet Parade on the Fourth of July. The group identified five major goals:

  1. Develop and enhance Burlingame’s small-town values. We want to celebrate our history, encourage cultural and family events that bring people together, and promote the look and feel of a small community.
  2. Protect and enhance Burlingame’s natural environment. We would like more people to appreciate why we are a “City of Trees” and help beautify our city.
  3. Promote Burlingame and increase city revenues. We want to toot our horn and tell other people what a great place Burlingame is, which should bring more businesses, more visitors and, we hope, more spending within city limits.
  4. Improve public communication and civic engagement in Burlingame. We could be doing a better job of informing citizens about what’s going on and promoting more ways for them to become involved.
  5. Develop and execute a vision for Burlingame. We need a plan for how we want Burlingame to be in 20 to 30 years.

Survey

The City Council is beginning to plan the city’s budget for 2004-2005 and will have to make some tough decisions about spending. I would like to hear from you about what your priorities are. If you have ideas for increasing city revenues, I’d also like to hear them.

At the workshop, I handed out a brief survey that I am asking Burlingame residents and business owners to complete. Click here to fill it out online. If you prefer, you can download the form and print it out, fill it out by hand, then mail it to me at: 2337 Poppy Drive, Burlingame 94010.

Patch List

Do you know of an annoying problem that you think the city should fix? A pothole on your street? A streetlight that’s burned out?

I’m creating a “Patch List” of small things that need to be fixed in Burlingame. I will forward your suggestions to the proper city authorities. To add an item to the list, send me an and be sure to include your address and phone number.
