THIS WEEK'S NEWS:
- Two editorials in local papers this week have supported Terry:
- The San Mateo County Times published an editorial on October 8 that chastises Terry's opponents for making a giant fuss over a photo in her campaign brochure: "Small Minds in This Small Town" http://www.sanmateocountytimes.com/Stories/0,1413,87%257E2458%257E1684317,00.phpl
- An editorial published today in the San Mateo Daily Journal chastizes City Manager Jim Nantell for reacting to unfounded complaints by the incumbents: "City Manager Should Have Left Politics to Politicians."
- Tom Marriscolo delivered a blistering speech before the Burlingame City Council on October 6, defending his First Amendment right to endorse Terry in the current race. Marriscolo was a commander with the Burlingame Police Department for 30 years and now is chief deputy coroner for San Mateo County.
- In response to accusations that she should not have listed two former city employees as endorsers in her brochure (Marriscolo and former Police Chief Gary Missel), Nagel pointed out that Mike Coffey and Mary Janney both have listed former City Manager Charles Schwalm in their current campaign brochures. Janney also has listed former Burlingame City Clerk Judy Malfatti in her current brochure. During the 2001 election, Joe Galligan listed Tom Marriscolo-then a current city employee-as an endorser in his brochure. In previous elections, Councilmembers Bud Harrison and Vic Mangini listed several current city employees as endorsers in their brochures.
FACE-OFF AT COOK-OFF
Expect hot times at Roosevelt School's Chili Cook-Off this Sunday, October 12, with participation by City Council challengers Terry Nagel and Russ Cohen as well as incumbents Mike Coffey and Mary Janney. Terry and former Mayor Mike Spinelli will cook "Power Surge Chili" in honor of PG&E, which has provided better service to Burlingame residents since Terry took them to task. Russ and Councilwoman Cathy Baylock will make "Chili con Cohen." Among those judging the entries will be Mike Coffey; Mary Janney will sell tickets.
The event will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Roosevelt School, 1151 Vancouver Ave. Those attending can purchase six tickets good for tastes of chili or games for kids for $5.

LOST AND FOUND
Someone left two small pewter-colored bowls at Terry's kickoff party. Are they yours? Terry is looking for a clear, leaf-patterned platter that had fruit on it during the party.
FOCUS GROUP FOR MOMS
A friend of Terry's, Heather Mason, is planning a series of workshops for girls ages 15 to 18 to teach them public speaking, self-esteem, self defense, poise and posture, and other skills that will help them become confident, independent individuals. She is offering a discount on the series to mothers and grandmothers who participate in a focus group about the project on Wednesday, October 22, at 7 p.m. at Terry's house.
