December 10, 2004
Dear Friend:
Want to get into the holiday spirit? Come down to Broadway tonight between
6 and 8 p.m. for Holiday Cheer entertainment sponsored by
the Broadway merchants and the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce. Santa will
make a special appearance, along with the New Life Community Bell Choir,
the Mills High School Jazz Band and Teris Dance School.
On Wednesday, December 22, bring your children to enjoy a Family Sing-Along by the Fireside, featuring folk singer Jim Stevens, in the Easton branch of the Burlingame Public Library from 7 to 9 p.m.
Looking for a last-minute gift? A thoughtful way to mark the season is
to contribute a new or used item to a local nonprofit organization in
honor of a friend or relative. Twenty nonprofits that serve Burlingame
and the City of Burlingame have listed items they would like donated in
the first Burlingame Community Wish List, which is available online on
my Web site and the citys Web site. You can print out a PDF version
from either Web site, or you can pick up a printed copy of the booklet
at the main Burlingame Public Library, the Easton branch library, the
Recreation Center, City Hall, all local schools and churches, and the
offices of the nonprofits listed.
If you donate by December 31, you can claim a write-off on your taxes.
By the way, did you know that the tax regulations will change significantly
on January 1, making it much less advantageous to donate your car after
the end of this year? One organization on the list is seeking donations
of cars: Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA).
These organizations would also welcome the gift of your time, if you wish to volunteer. They are all struggling to serve more needy individuals with fewer resources.
Among the items desired are:
I am indebted to local graphic artist Janice Prey Wolfe, who contributed her services in designing the booklet, and Mark Jaffe at ColorPrint of Burlingame, who donated the printing. I also want to thank the volunteers who distributed the booklet: Bobbi Benson, Cathy Foxhoven, Richard Grogan, Fiona and Stephen Hamilton, and Angela Johnson.
I was saddened to receive the news this week that Chris Keele has resigned from the Planning Commission due to the pressures of his busy life. He did an outstanding job on the commission and will be very hard to replace. If you want to recommend a candidate, please let me know. It would be particularly helpful to have someone with architectural or planning experience.
