Dear Friend:

Please vote!

Those elected on Tuesday will have major influence over how Burlingame evolves and whether or not you have a say in the process.

For help in understanding the issues and candidates, including school board candidates and state propositions, visit my Election Guide.

If you haven’t received your absentee ballot yet or you’ve suddenly learned you must be out of town on Election Day, you can still vote. Check the Election Q&A for San Mateo County Voters for helpful information.

Don’t ‘Bullet Vote’

Please vote for FOUR candidates for Burlingame City Council. Voting for fewer candidates than the number up for election, called “bullet voting,” is like voting for someone you don’t want elected.

In making your decision, look at the endorsements and follow the money behind the candidates to understand their bases of support. And beware of mailers called “voting guides” that purport to represent a political party or affinity group such as parents. Often candidates pay to be listed in these flyers.

On Election Night, you can get up-to-the-minute results by going to San Mateo County’s official election site, Shape the Future. A new feature on this site allows you to track your absentee ballot and see whether it has been counted. (If there’s any question, go to your regular polling place and request a “provisional ballot,” which will be counted if the absentee ballot doesn’t turn up.)

Get Ready for the Big One

On Saturday, November 12, San Mateo County is hosting a Disaster Preparedness Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the San Mateo County Expo Center at 2495 S. Delaware St. in San Mateo. The event is designed to connect you with all the help you need to prepare for fires, earthquakes, floods and terrorist actions. SWAT teams, firefighters and paramedics will be on hand to give demonstrations.

Admission is free, and complimentary hot dogs and sodas will be served. The first 1,000 families attending will receive a free emergency preparedness kit. For more information, call (650) 363-4790.

Don’t forget to vote!
