Another election? So soon? Yes, due to the untimely death of Congressman Tom Lantos, voters are being asked to vote in a Special Congressional Open Primary Election on April 8. If you’re an absentee voter, you should have already received your ballot.
To me and most of the people I know, the choice is clear: Jackie Speier is exceptionally experienced and qualified to be our next representative in Congress. She served as a San Mateo County supervisor from 1980 to 1986, in the California Assembly from 1989 to 1996 and in the State Senate from 1998 to 2006 before she was termed out. If elected, she pledges to continue working as a fearless consumer advocate, she’ll help overhaul the health care system, and she vows to get us out of Iraq. She has my vote, and I hope she has yours!
It is important to get out and vote for Jackie. If she receives 50 percent of the vote plus one vote, she will be sworn in April 10 and will be seated immediately – and we will again have representation in Congress. In addition, we will save the cost of another ballot in a runoff election in June, which could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Don’t take it for granted that she will win!
Please remember to vote April 8 or mail your ballot today. You can drop it into the absentee ballot box at Burlingame City Hall (510 Primrose Road) or have it postmarked as late as April 8. For more information about voting, visit San Mateo County’s official election site at http://www.shapethefuture.org/. If you’d like to help Jackie get elected, stop by her campaign office at 1209 Howard Ave., Suite 200, in Burlingame, call (650) 347-4370 or visit www.jackieforcongress.com.
A reminder that your Poppy Drive neighbors invite you to a free seminar this Tuesday, April 1, to learn how to organize your neighborhood for emergency preparedness – and have a lot of fun getting to know your neighbors better.
The program, called “Organize Your Neighborhood for Emergency Preparedness,” starts at 7 p.m. in the Lane Room at the main Burlingame Public Library. The Poppy block captains will explain how to create a neighborhood directory, share sample emergency preparedness flyers and offer information about all of the other emergency training and communication systems that the city offers to residents. Burlingame and Hillsborough residents are welcome.
One final reminder: Turn out your lights tonight from 8 to 9 p.m. to participate in the global Earth Hour 2008 campaign to bring awareness of the threat of global warming. For more information, visit www.earthhour.org.
Burlingame’s Green Ribbon Task Force, which I chair, will present recommendations for lowering carbon emissions and promoting sustainable practices during the City Council meeting on Monday, April 7, which begins at 7 p.m. in the Lane Room at the main Burlingame Public Library (due to construction at City Hall). We welcome community involvement in carrying out these recommendations.
