Report a Power Outage
It is critical for us to be able to provide PG&E with an accurate report of outages and their impact on our community. If you have experienced an outage, please enter the details in the Power Outage Form. You can also use this form to report tree trimming and customer service problems.
From Ashlie Simpson, Burlingame’s PG&E government relations rep, on August 27, 2010
Good Afternoon: Earlier this summer, in response to customers’ reliability concerns, PG&E began installing a new automated system that will decrease the duration of outages and help restore power to our customers faster. The project will benefit more than 15,500 customers throughout San Mateo, Burlingame and Hillsborough, who are currently served by PG&E’s Bay Meadows 2101, Bay Meadows 2102, Burlingame 2101, San Mateo 2101 and San Mateo 2102 electric circuits. The Intelli-Team system uses strategically installed switching devices to quickly identify and isolate faulted sections of power lines. Once identified, Intelli-Team automatically operates distribution switches and line reclosers to initiate the process of restoring power. While the switches isolate the problematic section, the system automatically reconfigures and restores power to all other impacted areas, in as little as 2 to 3 minutes. By integrating a remotely operated system, the delays previously inherent in a manually operated system are eliminated. Intelli-Team will improve reliability by minimizing the length of an outage and also will take advantage of the benefits associated with the use of automation technologies. This Intelli-Team project consists of 22 automated overhead switches within a circuit and 3 overhead reclosers, an automatic overhead protection device that senses a fault, such as a tree falling on a power line. A recloser tests the line, and if a fault is confirmed, it will isolate the damaged section. Also, these switches and other devices can be remotely monitored and operated by PG&E command center, thereby increasing how quickly we can respond to an outage. The ability to precisely identify and isolate a fault has other benefits. These include: 1) Automatically restoring power to customers on unfaulted segments of the circuit much faster; 2) Less patrol time needed to find the problem segment; 3) Crews can more quickly move to the problematic segment and start their repairs more quickly. We are currently midway through installation of the Intelli-Team system. The physical installation is scheduled to be completed by the end of August. We will then run complete system testing, which we hope to conclude by the end of October. We are excited to be launching this innovative program in San Mateo County and believe it will help considerably with reliability. I am available if you have questions or require additional information. Thank you, Ashlie
